The Råsegl seminar 2023 is now over. Thank you to Vestland Fylkekystlag, Forbundet KYSTEN (coastal federation) and Kystkultur.no (and not least the weather gods) for a very successful seminar. It was quite spectacular to see as many as 11 square-rigged boats on the Fanafjord on both Friday and Saturday.
The “råsegl” is a square rig, and is the oldest known type of sail in Norway. There are two almost synonymous terms in Norwegian for square rig – “råsegl” and “skværseil”. The term “råsegl” is mainly used to describe the square rig on traditional small boats and Viking ships, while “skværseil” is associated with larger sailing ships.
